Growing Hardy Trees & Shrubs From Seed
Date: Saturday, February 1, 2025; 1:00 pm - 3:00 PM
Details: More and more gardeners are discovering the opportunity in starting their own plants from seeds… but there remains a feeling of mystery or trepidation around sowing hardy trees and shrubs. Yet, learning to start these types of plants from seed opens up a world of landscape possibilities and cost savings, not to mention connects us to a long history of horticulture from which we’ve become largely removed. Join us for a very interesting session where participants will learn how to select varieties appropriate for seed propagation, how to apply the necessary biological triggers for germination (most often, this us cold… which we have an abundance of easy access to during the winter!) and how to care for the young plants through their first few years.
This is a hands-on class, so all participants will leave with seeds and any necessary accessories to start seedlings for a zone 3 hardy evergreen tree, a zone 3 hardy deciduous shrub and a zone 3 hardy fruiting shrub.
What is included:
-
Instruction on how to choose hardy trees and shrubs (including orchard plants) that can successfully be propagated from seeds
-
Fresh propagation material (viable seeds) for three types of hardy trees/shrubs include one fruiting type
-
All materials required for propagation (appropriate soil, extra-deep tree seedling tray, labels, etc)
