Description: This edible ornamental flies under the radar but is so worth growing!  The plants resemble foxglove, with a spire-like growth habit and lavender-coloured hooded flowers. This is a mix of black and light sesame seeds, both of which are delicious and easy to harvest.

Pack Size: 50 seeds (sows a 30' row)

Latin Name: Sesamum indicum
Main Uses: Culinary
Days to Maturity: 90 days
Exposure: Full sun
Height: 90 cm (3')
Certified Organic: USDA Certified Organic

Germination: 7 - 10 days at 21°C.
Sow: Indoors, 4 - 6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds 0.65 cm (1/4") deep and keep the surface of the potting mix lightly moist until germination is complete. Sow 2 seeds per plug cell.
Spacing: Space seedlings 30 cm (1') apart.

Harvesting: Harvest seeds when the pods start to shatter (break open). Use a paper bag and quickly trim pods into the bag so that seed is not lost to the garden.

Growing in Containers: Only works in large containers like half barrels.
Growing in Mixed Planters: Not suited for mixed planters.

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant into loamy soil and apply a general-purpose organic fertilizer every two weeks through the growing season. Sesame loves a well-draining but organically rich soil.

Watering (Garden): Water evenly through the season.

Garden Companions:

  • Sesame can grow well with other big herbs that love rich soil and sun, for example, larger-style basils.

Suitability for Indoors: Not suited for indoors as a productive crop but possibly a fun plant to watch grow indoors or to experiment with. Requires lots of heat and sun and is a true annual.
