Description: A gorgeous perennial with clusters of orange flowers. If started early enough, you may be able to encourage it to bloom in the first year. As with all members of the Asclepias family, Butterfly Weed is a host plant for Monarch Butterflies.

Germination:  10 - 14 days. Can germinate with no treatment but benefits from cold-stratification.
Start indoors: Start indoors 8-10 weeks before planting out. Sow seeds just beneath the surface of the soil in pots. Place pots in plastic bags and refrigerate for three weeks. Remove plastic and provide light and 50-75°F thereafter. Do not overwater. Transplant outdoors when a light frost is still possible.
Plant outdoors: 12 - 4" apart.

Growing in Containers: Not suited to containers.

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden recently amended with compost. Application of Sea Magic kelp supplement is beneficial.

Watering (Garden): Water deeply to establish. Water mature plants weekly during hot weather.

Beneficials Attracted to this Plant: 

  • Attracts bees, hummingbirds, moths, and butterflies. Host plant for Monarch butterflies.
