Description: English heirloom variety dating to 1863 with delicious flavour when eaten as a shell bean. Plants produce 5-6" pods each holding 3-5 large plump beans. Great for freezing or drying. Plants require cool conditions and are not heat tolerant. Hardy to -11 degrees Celsius! An excellent alternative to lima beans, which require a longer growing season than can typically can be achieved in northern regions.

Germination: 7 - 14 days at 22ºC. Temperatures below 15ºC will result in seed-rot.
Outdoors: Direct-seed in early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked. Very cold tolerant.
Planting Depth: 1”.
Spacing: Sow seeds 4 - 5'' apart in rows 18 - 30” apart. Thin to 8 - 10” once first true set of leaves has developed.
Growing in Containers: May be grown in raised beds or very large planters, such as barrels.
Mixed Planters: Not suited to mixed planters.
Garden Companions: Beets, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, corn, eggplant, potato, radishes, kale, lettuce, peas, potatoes, Swiss chard, and strawberry.
Plants to avoid: All members of the allium family (onions, leeks, garlic, scallions) and Kohlrabi inhibit growth in beans. Sunflowers will compete for light.
Pest/Disease Issues: Aphids can be washed off plants with a hard stream of water.
Harvesting: Can be harvested as a snap bean when beans are about the size of peas. For shell beans grow out to maturity(about 85 days from sowing).
