Garden Club - Fall seed saving
Date: Saturday, September 23 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm (*note that this is the only session scheduled for 1:00 pm - all other Garden Clubs start at 10:30 am)
Host: Dave Hanson
Registration: Garden Club is always FREE and there is no need to pre-register... just grab a friend and come on down. Garden Clubs take place at Sage Garden Greenhouses, and participants meet at our main greenhouse starting around 12:30, so we can get going right at *1:00 pm.
We do ask that participants bring a non-perishable food item for donation. All donations are picked up by the hardworking volunteers at St. Mary's Road United Church, which operates a busy food bank in St. Vital, serving an average of 700 people per month.
Details: Seeds are one of the golden opportunities of the late summer/fall garden! Dave will share some of the cool seed saving tips we have been learning at Sage Garden, as we move towards collecting many more of our own seeds from plants we grow in stock beds, as well as in the greenhouse. We'll discuss the types of plants that are easy-wins when it comes to seed saving, the pros and cons of natural cross pollination, spacing for professional seed production, techniques for cleaning seeds as well as how to dry and store saved seeds.
About the host: Dave is the founder of Sage Garden and enthusiastic ringmaster of our Garden Clubs. He has been growing plants indoors and out since he was a teenager, and loves to be surrounded by exotic, aromatic and edible plants year-round. You can catch Dave keeping busy in his many roles at Sage Garden, on CBC Radio during the Weekend Morning Show gardening call-in (Sundays, 8:30 am), and as co-host of the popular Grow Guide podcast.
