Description: Mildly spicy gourmet green for sandwiches, salads, and soup. Human beings are 60% water; it is the most common molecule in our bodies. Perhaps it is no surprise, then, that early humans were drawn to watercress as one of the first wild greens to be consumed. After all, it is 95% water; it grows in water; and its deep green leaves undulate like seaweed in the current. The crop straddles the line between wild and cultivated: irrigated well, it can be grown in the garden; transplanted along a stream, it will set roots into the watery soil and return each spring.
This refreshing green crop has deep, peppery undertones. Serves as a lovely spring tonic. Perennial. Excels in containers.

Sowing: Surface sow in spring when temperatures are consistently above 7°C. Once plants are established, thin to indicated spacing. For home growers, watercress is most easily grown in containers filled with quality compost, in a shady spot, with a deep tray filled with water under. Change water weekly and harvest frequently.

Growing in Containers: Grows very well in containers and raised beds.
Fertilizing (Containers): Add up to 25% quality compost to your potting mix. This plant loves a higher nitrogen fertilizer - diluted fish fertilizer is an excellent organic choice, applied weekly.
Watering (Containers): Water deeply when top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Check every day or two during very hot weather.
Growing in Mixed Planters: Well suited for larger mixed planters. Think square foot gardening!
Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden bed recently amended with quality compost. Feed weekly with a higher nitrogen organic fertilizer.
Watering (Garden): Water young plants regularly to establish, the water deeply as conditions require.
