Description: An easy-to-grow pole bean that produces an abundance of green pods with attractive purple streaks. Rattlesnake beans have fine flavour and are very tender when fresh; dried, the speckled seeds are popular for soup. This heirloom bean does better than most in hot and humid summer conditions.
Pack Size: 50 seeds
Latin Name: Phaseolus vulgaris
Main Uses: Culinary
Height: Vine
Days to Maturity: 60 - 90 days
Exposure: Full sun
Certified Organic: USDA Certified Organic
Germination: 3- 6 days.
Outdoors: Direct seed at least one week past the risk of frost. Dry beans require warmer soil temperatures than snap beans. Choose well-drained soil with average fertility. Amend the garden bed with quality compost such as Sea Soil.
Planting Depth: 1”.
Spacing: Sow seeds 5” apart in rows 28” - 36” apart. Thin to 8” - 10” apart. If you are planting around a pole, sow 8 - 10 seeds per pole and thin to 3 - 4 plants per pole.
Growing: Dry pole beans require a sturdy trellis or pole to accommodate their vining habit.
Growing in Containers: May be grown in raised beds or very large planters, such as barrels. Provide a trellis or pole.
Garden Companions: Beets, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, corn, eggplant, potato, radishes, kale, lettuce, peas, potatoes, Swiss chard, and strawberry.
Plants to Avoid: All members of the allium family (onions, leeks, garlic, scallions) and Kohlrabi inhibit growth in beans. Sunflowers will compete for light.
Pest/Disease Issues: Aphids can be washed off plants with a hard stream of water.
Harvesting: Dry beans flower and set fruit all at once. Harvest pods once they have become dry and leathery and the beans rattle around. The beans should be quite hard at this stage. If by the end of the season, the beans are not dry enough to harvest, cut down the entire plant and hang it upside down indoors until dry.
Suitability for Indoors: Not suited for indoors.
