Description:  A truly cool edible ornamental plant! Sturdy vines grow 3 - 6 feet in a season, provided support. Unlike regular spinach, Malabar thrives on the heat of summer. Typically cooked before eating.

If you want to winter this one indoors, it works well in a bright location.

Also called: Alugbati (Philippines), Phak Pang (Laos/Thai), Pui Saag (Bengali), Ceylon Spinach.

Organically Grown/ Heirloom/ Open Pollinated/ Non-GMO

Pack Size: 25 seeds

Latin Name: Basella alba

Main Uses: Culinary (but also so beautiful!)

Hardiness: Zone 10
Exposure: Full sun
Seed Source: Québec vrai

Germination: 14 - 30 days at 21ºC.
Indoors: Sow seeds in plug cells or small, bio-degradable pots. Plant 2 - 3 seeds per cell or starter container. Bottom heat will speed up germination, and improve consistency. Transplant to outdoors once all chance of frost has passed. Harden young plants off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for several days before planting.
Planting depth: Plant seeds approximately 2.5 cm (1") deep.

Harvesting: prune off young leaves as the plant grows up - but do a little research on using Malabar Spinach before using, as the semi-succulent leaves are quite different from classic spinach.

Growing in Containers: Malabar Spinach thrives in large pots, provided support for the tall vines.

Fertilizing in Containers: Feed regularly with an all-purpose organic plant food.

Fertilizing (Garden): The plant will be more productive if fertilized regularly with an all-purpose organic plant food.

Watering (Garden): Water young plants regularly to establish, then water deeply as conditions require.

Suitability for Indoors: If wintering indoors, trim plants back substantially and grow in the brightest location available.
