Description: Your summer and fall salads may just be missing an essential ingredient! Radicchio takes mixed salads to new heights with its tangy flavour, gorgeous colour, and crunchy texture. 'Palla Rossa' is dark red with tight heads.

Pack Size: ~ 100 seeds

Latin Name: Chicorium intybus
Main Uses: Culinary

Days to Maturity: 75 - 80 days
Exposure: Full sun
Height: 60 - 75 cm (24 - 30 inches)
Certified Organic: USDA Certified Organic

Germination: 7 - 14 days at 21°C.
Sowing Indoors: In cold climates, radicchio needs to be timed as an early-summer transplant that is harvested during the cool fall. Starting too early will not be beneficial. An ideal time to sow indoors would be late May. Start in plug flats or small starter pots, sowing two seeds per cell or pot.
Seeding Depth: 0.55 cm (1/4")
Planting Out: Plant individual seedlings 30 cm (12") apart

Growing in Containers: Grows well in larger pots and raised beds

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden bed amended with compost. No additional fertilizer is required.

Watering (Garden): Water new transplants regularly to establish roots. Once established, water deeply as required.

Special Requirements for Cold Climate Gardeners: Because radicchio requires cool weather ahead of harvest time, it is only possible to grow a fall crop in short-season regions. Transplants are fine growing through the summer months, but should only be harvested after cool fall weather sets in.

Pest/Disease Issues: Radicchio can be impacted by aphids, cabbage moths, and slugs

Suitability for Indoors: Growing radicchio indoors requires special attention to temperature and lighting requirements. It can be done but is not straightforward in the way other leafy greens can be grown.
