Description: Quinoa, in Canada? Yes! Growing this ancient grain is easier than you may imagine and you can harvest the young leaves as greens as well as collect abundant edible seeds. To make things even more exciting, this is a cool-looking plant and many people use the flowers in late-season bouquets!

Pack Size: 50 seeds (sows a 25' row)

Latin Name: Chenopodium quinoa
Main Uses: Culinary, Ornamental
Days to Maturity: 105 days to maturity
Exposure: Full sun
Height: 6'
Certified Organic: USDA Certified Organic

Germination: 3 - 7 days at 21°C.
Sow: Indoors, about four weeks before the local last frost date. Plant two seeds per plug. Transplant to the outdoor garden in soil rich in organic matter, about a week before the last frost (they tolerate the cool but harden off a few days before transplanting).
Spacing: Space seedlings 1’ apart.

Harvesting: Seed heads are ready once you can feel seeds are firm; harvest then dry hanging upside-down before winnowing to clean seed.

Growing in Containers: Only works in large containers like half barrels.
Growing in Mixed Planters: Not suited for mixed planters.

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden bed amended with lots of compost and apply a general-purpose organic fertilizer every two weeks. The better the soil fertility the higher the productivity of quinoa.

Garden Companions:

  • This is a big, dominant plant so best given its own space!
