Description: The essential plant of the original tall grass prairie - currently experiencing a renaissance as an urban landscape plant! It has eye-catching seeds heads nd orangey fall colours. Provides shelter for songbirds.

Germination: 18 - 28 days at 21°C.
Sowing:  Indoors 8 - 12 weeks before the last frost. Big Bluestem benefits from a period of cold before sowing. Place the seeds into a moistened paper towel and enclose them in a freezer bag (leave slightly open);  place in the crisper (in the fridge). Once the cold period is complete, sow gently into organic potting mix in a warm, bright location indoors. T

For best results, apply Sea Magic™ kelp from first watering. Apply a seedling-starter fertilizer such as Evolve Seedling once the second set of true leaves has appeared, and then alternate between the kelp and seedling starter until transplant. 
Planting depth: Gently press the seeds into the starter mix.
Planting Out: Transplant to the garden in early June.
Spacing: 50 cm (20”). Suitable for garden beds.

Growing in Containers: Not well-suited to containers.

Growing in Mixed Planters: Not well suited to mixed containers.

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden recently amended with compost. No further fertilizing is required.

Watering (Garden): Water deeply to establish. Mature plants are drought tolerant.
