Description: We love these soft mocha blooms with a sweet jasmine scent irresistible to hummingbirds as well as humxns. Neither tall nor small, Hot Chocolate Nicotiana thrives in containers as well as garden soil, dramatic along edges, and nourishing beneficial pollinators wherever they are planted. Easy to grow, nicotiana is impressively drought tolerant and blooms abundantly even in mediocre soil. Organic Hot Chocolate Nicotiana also has one of the longest bloom times we’ve ever witnessed, blossoming from early July through early September, often longer with frequent harvesting.
- Interesting fact: Nicotiana is a cousin to petunias!
Latin Name: Nicotiana tabacum
Alternative Names: Woodland Tobacco, Night Scented Tobacco

Sowing Indoors: 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 5 - 8 seeds per cell or plug. For best results, apply Sea Magic™ kelp from the first watering. Apply a seedling-starter fertilizer such as Evolve Seedling once the second set of true leaves has appeared, and then alternate between the kelp and seedling starter until transplant.
Sowing Outdoors: Sow seeds directly in the garden in early June, once the soil has warmed and there is no chance of frost. Direct seeding is an easy way to start Nicotianas.
Planting depth: Direct-sow seeds by scattering them lightly on the soil surface. Lightly press into the soil.
Growing in Containers: Well-suited for large raised beds, but not smaller containers.
Growing in Mixed Planters: Not suited for mixed planters.
Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden bed recently amended with quality compost. No additional fertilizing is required.
Watering (Garden): Water deeply to establish. Water mature plants weekly during hot weather.
Pest/Disease Issues: Nicotiana attracts aphids, whitefly, beetles, and cutworms away from Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Broad beans (this is a good organic gardening strategy!).
Suitability for Indoors: Not suited for indoors.
