Description: Beautiful bright orange flowers cover the plant from mid-summer until early fall. Attracts bees, hummingbirds, moths, and butterflies. Blooms reliably from seed the first year if sown early. Plants will reach 2-3' tall in dry sandy soil and in well-drained loams.

Germination:  10 - 14 days. Can germinate with no treatment but benefits from cold-stratification.
Start indoors: Start indoors 8-10 weeks before planting out. Sow seeds just beneath surface of soil in pots. Place pots in plastic bags and refrigerate for three weeks. Remove plastic and provide light and 50-75°F thereafter. Do not overwater. Transplant outdoors when light frost is still possible.
Plant outdoors: 12 - 4" apart.

Growing in Containers: Not suited to containers.

Fertilizing (Garden): Plant in a garden recently amended with compost. Application of Sea Magic kelp supplement is beneficial.

Watering (Garden): Water deeply to establish. Water mature plants weekly during hot weather.

Beneficials Attracted to this Plant: 

  • Attracts bees, hummingbirds, moths, and butterflies. Host plant for Monarch butterflies.
