Description: Asparagus is a very long-lived perennial, and thus should be planted in a dedicated bed. Plants need to establish for 2 to 3 seasons before the first harvest, after which plants yield abundantly. 'Sweet Purple' features gorgeous purple spears. The Colour turns to green when cooked. Plants are long-lived.
Asparagus requires well-drained, fertile soil and cannot tolerate wet feet. Heavy clay or very sandy soil both require amendment with ample compost
Ensure the planting site is well-weeded; covering with cardboard eight weeks ahead of planting is an excellent weed-killing technique.
Plant in trenches 20 cm (8") deep, with a 10 cm (4") ridge of loose soil down the middle; splay the long roots down the sides of the ridge, then cover everything with nice soil. Plant one pot every 30 cm (1'), leaving 90 cm (3') between rows. Water well to establish.
Starting in third year. Harvest tender spring shoots at 12 cm. Do not harvest until shoots are pencil-thick.
