Description: Collards may be less familiar to some gardeners than kale, but in fact, can be used in the same ways but with greater cold tolerance and impressively sweet flavour. Hen Peck has beautiful large leaves and is truly cold resistant for the gardener wanting to push the shoulder seasons. Love it!

Germination: 7 - 14 days at 10 - 22ºC. Can be sown quite cool.
Outdoors: Direct sow in spring, once the ground is workable. Will tolerate light frost. Sow in early July for a fall crop. Collards can be resown in late summer for an excellent fall crop. 
Planting depth: 1/4 "
Spacing: Sow 3 seeds every 18 - 24". Thin to the strongest seedling.

Harvesting: Avoid the oldest leaves. Harvest by cutting upper leaves (if you wish to maintain an ongoing crop), otherwise harvest the whole plant.

Growing in Containers: Ideal for raised beds, but not smaller containers.

Growing in Mixed Planters: Not well-suited to mixed planters.

Garden Companions: 

  • Companion plants:  dill, rosemary, sage, thyme and chamomile can all be useful between collards.
  • Vegetables that benefit collards: potatoes, celery, beets. onions, mint and nasturtiums.

Pest/Disease Issues: Floating row covers deter pests such as cabbage moths and flea beetles.

Suitability for Indoors: May be grown indoors as a baby green
