Description: A dense, crisp-head lettuce that tolerates heat. The leaves are bright green with deep red colouring.

Pack Size: 500 seeds

Latin Name: Lactuca sativa
Main Uses: Vegetable
Days to Maturity: 48 days to full size
Exposure: Full sun

Germination Instructions: Germination: 7 - 14 days in soil at 4° C or warmer.
Sowing: Indoors start lettuce transplants 3- 4 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 5 - 8 seeds per cell or plug. Harden-off seedlings by reducing water and temperature. For best results, apply Sea Magic™ kelp from the first watering. Apply a seedling-starter fertilizer such as Evolve Seedling once the second set of true leaves has appeared, and then alternate between the kelp and seedling starter until transplant.
Sowing Outdoors:  Sow outdoors in late May or early June, or once the soil has warmed to 4° C and there is no chance of frost. Sow thinly 1/4 and 1" apart.
Planting depth: Cover with a dusting of soil. Lightly press into the planting medium to ensure good soil contact. Water the seeds gently with a fine spray. Keep the soil evenly watered until the seedlings emerge, which should be about 7 - 14 days.
Planting Out: Plant in well-drained fertile soil (garden or container) once seedlings are established and the risk of frost has passed. For continuous harvest, sow lettuce every 3 weeks.

Growing in Containers: No garden? No problem! Lettuce is well-suited to containers that are a minimum of 6-8 inches in diameter. Also suitable for barrels and raised beds - think Square Foot Gardening!

Fertilizing (Containers): Add 25% quality compost, such as Sea Soil, to the potting mix. Fertilize weekly with a higher-nitrogen organic plant food such as fish-based fertilizer.

Watering (Containers): Water containers deeply when the top inch feels dry to the touch. Monitor every day or two during very hot weather.

Growing in Mixed Planters: Only larger mixed planters.

Fertilizing (Garden): Amend garden soil with quality compost such as Sea Soil. Application of Sea Magic kelp every two weeks will result in healthier and more prolific crops.

Watering (Garden): Water young plants regularly to establish, then water deeply as conditions require.

Companion Planting: Planting lettuce between rows of corn will provide some shelter from the heat and sun.

Notes: Mulch plants in summer to keep the soil cool.

Suitability for Indoors: Not well-suited for indoors. Looseleaf and Romaine-style lettuces are better suited to indoors.
